Today I’m chatting with Charleston artist, Kate Mullin Williford of Kate Mullin Art. I first became obsessed with her work when I stumbled across one of her cow paintings on instagram. I mean can I have an entire wall of cows in my house please? I love her signature style with all the bold colors and thick strokes. And I’m not the only one that has taken notice. She has been featured by One Kings Lane, Furbish Stuidos, The Gallery on Broad and many more. A Columbus, GA native she received her BFA in studio art from Auburn University in 2011. After years of owning and managing an art gallery in downtown Charleston, Kate decided to focus on her personal work. Read more about her work as an artist and some of her favorite spots in her hometown of Charleston below!
How did you get started as an artist?
I can’t really remember how I got started as an artist! I’ve been painting and drawing ever since I was little. There wasn’t a day where I thought “I’m going to be an artist”. It is just something I always did and enjoyed doing.
I guess I became a professional artist by sticking with it and staying in an art environment after graduating college.
How would you describe your style?
I always say “thick paint”. Impasto. I go back and forth on how realistic or abstract, I paint according to each subject matter.
What are your favorite mediums?
My favorite is oils. You can get great texture and such rich colors with oils. It can be frustrating how long they take to dry, but I think the end result is worth the wait!
Where are your favorite places to create? Do you work out of a studio?
I’ve had 7 different studio spaces so far and I believe I’ve finally found “my space”. It is a little studio in Mt. Pleasant, SC off of Shem Creek. It has great light, lots of ventilation, and a great vibe. So my new studio space is my favorite place to paint.
Do you have any favorite pieces?
I would say yes, but my favorite paintings always change. Next week, I’ll have a new one.
